The Aussie Heroes Series I think is a brilliant concept. Real life is more inspiring than fable and the home-bred role models are genuine heroes. I can’t think of a better way to motivate our children to take an interest in Australian history and perhaps even their own future paths, then by presenting them with such amazing real stories.
The story of Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop follows Dame Nellie Melba. Weary’s story is one of true strength of character, intelligence, perseverance and an amazing ability to carry on in the face of the worst kinds of adversity. We can only hope that our children never experience war the way Weary and his men did. Yet at the same time the stories must go on. Weary is a fantastic example of human kindness and understanding. He was ingenious in his life saving procedures and from very humble beginnings let nothing stand in his way. He wanted to become a doctor and in that field he excelled. A true hero. I learned a thing or two from this book and I suspect there may be a little something in it for all of us.
